Nellie travel designer Molly recently spent eight weeks exploring Portugal, meeting hoteliers, touring properties, and experiencing the places we're most excited about firsthand. She came away with an understanding of which properties are actually worth your time—and more importantly, who they're right for.

For the Design Lover Who Wants a Stay with Personality

Hotel Vermelho, Melides

Some hotels look beautiful. Others have a point of view. Hotel Vermelho does both.

Tucked into the sleepy village of Melides, about 90 minutes south of Lisbon, this 13-room boutique hotel was created by Christian Louboutin after falling in love with the region. And while plenty of celebrity-backed hotels can feel a little too polished, Vermelho feels intensely personal.

Every corner tells a story.

You'll find flashes of Louboutin red, emerald-green tilework, Moroccan influences, Portuguese craftsmanship, French flourishes, and a level of detail that's almost impossible to appreciate from photos alone.

One of Molly's favorite discoveries? Many of the tiles throughout the hotel were intentionally cracked and distressed by Louboutin himself so they would feel older and more rooted in place. Even the columns were designed to resemble his signature mascara tubes.

It's whimsical. It's eccentric. It's incredibly memorable.

The service was warm and polished, the restaurant was excellent, and the hotel makes it easy to settle into Melides' understated rhythm. Borrow an e-bike, ride to the beach, spend an afternoon browsing local boutiques, then finish the day with a sunset drink in town.

As a one- or two-night stay paired with Lisbon or Alentejo, it's magic.

For Travelers Who Want the Algarve Beyond the Beach

Octant Vila Monte

One of the biggest misconceptions about the Algarve is that it's only about beach resorts. Vila Monte proves that there's a completely different side to southern Portugal worth exploring.

Set among orange groves about twenty minutes inland from the coast, Vila Monte feels more like a countryside estate than a traditional resort. The atmosphere is relaxed, authentic, and quietly luxurious. If you're traveling with extended family or a group of friends, we particularly recommend booking the Villa Indigo—a private oasis within the larger estate. 

And that estate is remarkable. You can pick and eat fruit from the orange trees when they’re in season, and the onsite restaurant is fantastic. The impressive gift boutique is stocked with goods from local artisans, and you can visit almost any of them. 

Partake in a palm-weaving workshop and discover one of the Algarve’s traditional crafts. Visit the olive farm that supplies the oil served in the onsite restaurant. Take a boat to Ria Formosa National Park to tour a working oyster farm and enjoy a tasting of oysters paired with white wine at the conclusion. Or join excursions ranging from fishing trips and 4x4 adventures through nearby villages to pottery workshops and visits to wineries.

But although we were impressed by the design, the rooms, and the connection to the community, the people stood out to us most.

From the moment guests arrive, the service feels genuinely attentive. Staff know names, remember preferences, and make the entire experience feel effortless but not too formal.

The property works surprisingly well for a wide range of travelers. Couples love the adults-only areas, while families gravitate toward the spacious rooms, villas, and strong kids' programming.

Vila Monte isn’t just a place to stay, it’s an authentic window into the incredible art and culture of the Algarve, with something to love for just about anyone.

For Couples Who Want to Check In and Never Leave

Vila Joya

Not every luxury hotel needs to be everything to everyone. Vila Joya understands that better than most.

Originally a private family villa, this intimate 13-room property feels more like being invited into someone's exceptionally beautiful coastal home than staying at a traditional hotel.

Ocean views dominate nearly every corner of the property, and the atmosphere is quiet, elegant, and decidedly grown-up. Guests linger over long lunches, spend afternoons by the pool, and plan dinners around one of Portugal's most celebrated restaurants.

In fact, dining is one of the main reasons to come.

The hotel's restaurant has held two Michelin stars for more than two decades and remains one of the country's culinary landmarks. On our visit we discovered the menu reportedly changes daily, which speaks volumes about the creativity happening behind the scenes.

This is not the Algarve for travelers looking for energy, nightlife, or endless activities. It's for people who want permission to slow down. To read by the pool. To order another bottle of wine. To watch the waves roll in and out for a while and take long walks on the golden sand of the nearby Praia da Galé, or go for an unhurried stroll through old town Albufeira.

For two or three nights, as a romantic finale to a longer trip, it can’t be beat.

For Families, Couples, and Multi-Gen Trips That Need a Little Bit of Everything

Vila Vita Parc

If Molly had to choose the Algarve property that felt most universally appealing, Vila Vita Parc would be it.

Set atop the Algarve’s iconic cliffs, the privately owned resort feels understated, with an old-money sensibility. It’s large without losing its sense of intimacy, and it delivers exactly what many travelers imagine when they picture southern Portugal: sweeping ocean views, boats passing by below, beautiful gardens, infinity pools, and enough space to spread out without losing a sense of intimacy.

But what impressed us most was how thoughtfully the property serves different types of travelers.

Couples can disappear into adults-only spaces. Families have access to villas, multi-bedroom accommodations, and endless activities. Multi-generational groups can easily spend a week together without feeling on top of one another. The resort’s fleet of yachts and speedboats opens up luxurious days cruising the Algarve coastline with champagne and canapés. 

We highly recommend chartering a boat for a day along the coast, visiting the nearby Benagil caves, spending an afternoon at Praia da Marinha, or heading to nearby ceramics shop Porches Pottery to pick up a hand-crafted souvenir.

And then there’s the food.

With twelve dining venues, including Michelin-starred restaurants and more relaxed family options, the resort has more than enough options to please a large party and keep your meals exciting through a long stay. Add Portugal’s largest private wine collection and tastings or private dinners in the wine cellar, and there’s no reason to leave to eat. 

Those are the kinds of details that elevate a stay from great to unforgettable, either as the single stop of an Algarve trip or paired with a contrasting stay like Vila Monte or Vermelho along the way.
