When thinking of a beach vacation that’s not too far afield, Mexico and Hawaii are usually the first to come to mind.
But French Polynesia, is a spectacular destination for those who crave something different. With its crystal-clear waters, lush landscapes, Zen-like vibe, and world-class resorts, this archipelago of islands offers once-in-a-lifetime resorts and water adventures.
Why we’re loving it
Tahiti is a fabulous destination particularly for West Coast travelers. With direct flights from San Francisco and Los Angeles (eight hours), it’s more accessible for West Coasters than Caribbean islands.
And unlike more crowded tropical locales, Tahiti offers a sense of calm and tranquility, making it ideal for couples seeking romance, privacy, and adventure. While it's a popular honeymoon destination, it's great for any couple looking to reconnect in one of the most beautiful places on the planet.
Our 3 favorite resorts
Best for Families: Four Seasons Resort Bora Bora
The Four Seasons in Bora Bora is, hands down, our favorite property for families in French Polynesia. The overwater bungalows are to die for—spacious, beautifully decorated, and with views that'll make you pinch yourself. That bathtub overlooking the lagoon? Pure magic. The service is impeccable, the food is divine, and the spa...well, let's just say we always budget extra time for treatments when we book our clients here. Of all the properties in the region, the Four Seasons best blends world-class service with family-friendly amenities.
For water-lovers: Sofitel Kia Ora Beach Resort, Moorea
For our clients who prioritize snorkeling and wildlife encounters, we love recommending the Sofitel in Moorea. Now, full disclosure: the rooms could use a bit of updating. But what it lacks in modern touches, it more than makes up for in charm and location. The beach bungalows are our go-to here. They offer stunning ocean views and put you right where the action is for some of the best snorkeling we've ever experienced.
For privacy-seekers: The Brando, Tetiaroa
When our clients ask for the ultimate in privacy, we point them to The Brando on the private island of Tetiaroa. The resort’s layout ensures privacy and, the resort's commitment to conservation and unique experiences make it truly unique. From observing coconut crabs to touring "Bird Island" and enjoying a mosquito-free environment, The Brando provides a private island vibe without being a private island.. The only con is that the rooms could be a little more inspired.
What to do
The beauty of Tahiti lies in the fact that you don’t have to do anything to have an amazing vacation. But if you want to venture outside your resort, the water is where you want to spend your time. From swimming in impossibly blue lagoons to jet skiing around Bora Bora, the options for water activities are endless.
One standout experience we had on our trip was a snorkeling tour in Moorea. We hopped onto a private boat, journeyed to a snorkeling spot and then hopped into the water. We each grabbed a rope and then our boat gently pulled us through the turquoise sea where we swam alongside sea turtles, colorful tropical fish, and rays. Absolutely unforgettable.
