From private island retreats to family-friendly luxury resorts, these destinations offer a perfect antidote to winter blues and a refreshing alternative to the usual suspects.
MEXICO
Four Seasons Tamarindo
Consider the Four Seasons Tamarindo a well-kept secret on the west coast of Mexico. Opened in late 2022, the hotel’s closest airport is Manzanillo. For now, direct flights are few and far between but don’t let that deter you (LA, you’re the lucky early adopter here). The property can easily be combined with a food-centric trip to Mexico City (multiple direct flights a day to Manzanillo) or opt to tough it out and take a connecting flight. The journey is worth it. For architecture lovers, the Four Seasons Tamarindo delivers in spades with accolades including Architectural Digest naming it one of the top hotel openings. The contemporary oceanfront resort offers a secluded escape on a private peninsula surrounded by a nature reserve. As expected the hotel offers pristine beaches and world-class dining. The focus on Mexican heritage, sustainability and protecting the surrounding biodiversity really set this property apart. Note: Due to the resort’s remote location, if you like to venture off property, this hotel is not for you.
One&Only Mandarina
Also located on Mexico's Pacific coast, but this time near Puerto Vallarta, the One&Only Mandarina is quickly becoming a favorite among guests seeking a private adult resort that is family friendly. Set amongst lush tropical forests and overlooking the ocean, this resort offers a truly unique layout from the stunning treehouse-style rooms to the private, spread-out ambience. With its exceptional kids' club, multiple pools, and array of activities, it's a perfect choice for families looking for a high-end beach escape without traveling too far from the US. Insider tip: due to the spread-out nature of the resort you will want to order your golf carts ahead of time to avoid waiting for them to arrive.
FIJI
Kokomo Private Island
For those willing to venture a bit further, Kokomo Private Island in Fiji is Nellie client favorite for family trips. This private island offers an experience so personalized the restaurants stay open until you're done eating, no matter how late. It’s a good value compared to similar properties in the US, considering the level of luxury and food/beverage inclusions. Insider tip: Select rooms on the sunset side of the island.
PANAMA
Islas Secas, Panama
Panama may be off your radar but it shouldn’t be. With minimal time zone difference from the US, direct flights from many US locations to Panama City, and several great resorts, this Central American country delivers easy winter sun. Enter Islas Secas! This private archipelago, with just a handful of casitas and a focus on eco-luxury, manages to deliver a truly all-inclusive “anywhere, anytime” level of service from a remote island. Scuba diving lessons, whale watching expeditions and picnics on private islands are all included. Insider Tip: Reserve early because the resort books early during school holidays.
BRITISH VIRGIN ISLANDS
Moskito Island
You've likely heard of Richard Branson's famous Necker Island, but did you know about its lesser-known sister property, Moskito Island? This ultra-exclusive retreat in the British Virgin Islands offers privacy and seclusion with four villas and a maximum occupancy of 70 guests. While you don't need to rent the entire island, you do need to book a minimum of five suites, making it perfect for a getaway with friends or family. Or, why not, go ahead and book the whole island for a corporate retreat or milestone celebration.
