Though you may be packing to jet off to your summer vacation destination, now’s actually the time to start planning your winter break trip. Instead of yet another sun-and-surf getaway (though we love those, too), you might want to consider a destination that actually embraces the colder temperatures and snow-dusted landscapes. From the rich cultural tapestry of Turkey and Morocco to the winter wonderland of Sweden, here are three destinations we love for the holiday season.

Inspirational Istanbul

Istanbul, Turkey is an absolute delight during the holiday season. The historic mosques, palaces, and markets shine and twinkle with festive lights. Even better, the crowds have thinned out compared to the peak summer months, allowing you to experience iconic sites like the Hagia Sophia and Topkapi Palace with fewer tourists. The city's shopping scene also heats up with retailers offering deep discounts to clear inventory before the new year. Experiences we love include a visit to a Turkish hammam for a traditional bathing ritual, eating a “worker’s lunch” in the city, shopping for handmade tiles and rugs and taking a private tour of the Topkapi Palace.

In Istanbul, spend a few nights at the exquisite Peninsula Hotel on the banks of the Bosphorus. This “sexy” property features incredible amenities like a stunning pool, rooftop bar with jaw-dropping views (no better place to watch the sun set), and unique touches like laundry service picked up from a secret compartment in your room.

A few hours away in Cappadocia, explore the mind-bending "fairy chimney" rock formations, take a bucketlist hot air balloon ride, and stay in a unique cave hotel like the Museum Hotel. It features lovingly restored ancient dwellings filled with antiques and original architectural elements.

The Magic of Morocco

December is one of the most popular times to visit Morocco thanks to its relatively mild winter weather. Immerse yourself in the sights, sounds, and flavors of ancient cities like Casablanca, Fez, and Marrakesh. The latter is home to an incredible luxury hotel that was the personal passion project of King Mohammed VI - the Royal Mansour. This lavish property comprises 53 individual riads or traditional Moroccan houses.

After exploring Morocco's cultural capitals, head to the High Atlas Mountains for a few nights at the Kasbah Tamadot. This stunning resort was recently renovated after damage from an earthquake and is slated to reopen in late 2024. It's the perfect place to unwind, get pampered, go hiking, or simply soak in the magnificent mountain scenery.

Starry-eyed for Sweden

For a totally different winter holiday, head to Sweden to experience a true winter wonderland. In the capital Stockholm, embrace classic Swedish traditions like fika (coffee break), indulge in princess cake, and tour sights like the Vasa shipwreck museum.

Then fly north of the Arctic Circle for some incredible cold-weather adventures. Go dog sledding through snowy forests, scan the night skies for the ethereal northern lights, and spend a night at the world-famous Ice Hotel. This incredible property is rebuilt annually using tons of ice and snow, featuring whimsical suites, bars and even an ice church - a truly unforgettable experience.
